The Key to Accomplishing Your New Year’s Goals

Every year during this time, millions of people across the country make themselves a promise – a promise to live a happier and healthier life in the New Year. This is something we all want: to live a healthier lifestyle, to feel better than we currently do and to have more energy for daily activities.

One of the main roadblocks individuals face with accomplishing their New Year’s goals is jumping in full steam ahead without taking the proper steps to define what constitutes success. It is easy to say that you want to get in better shape, but by clearly defining goals, an individual will be much more likely to stick to their resolution.

If you’ve had trouble sticking with your goals in the past, here are a few steps to help you build the right habits for success:

Make exercise a part of your daily routine – As with anything, the most difficult step is getting started. Whether you are going to the gym or working out at home, making fitness a part of your daily routine will help you create the habit and stick with it. That may mean taking 20 minutes when you first wake up to bust out a few bodyweight exercises or going to the gym everyday for a set amount of time. It can also be a hybrid of the two, which can help to maintain motivation and build a habit without burning out. The important part? That you are actively taking steps each day to achieve your goal.
Take your fitness journey one step at a time – The most successful people didn’t get where they are overnight. It takes hard work and dedication to accomplish anything, and by taking the appropriate steps and segmenting your journey you will be able to accomplish anything you put your mind to! Before you know it you will be breaking personal records and setting the next milestones for you to reach.
Have fun with it! – Regardless of how effectively you accomplish the other parts of your resolution, if you aren’t having fun with it, odds are you aren’t going to get the most out of the work you put in. Do you have a favorite sport or activity? Try to find ways to incorporate these into your workout routine. Play a game of pickup basketball once a week, or get a group together for a weekly ski/snowboard trip every few weeks during the winter. The more you can make your workouts fun, the less it will feel like work.

Once you achieve your goal you can move on to the next one! They say it takes 21 days to create a habit, and by working towards your goals in a very targeted and strategic manner you will be able to do this easier than ever before. Don’t let this New Year be like New Years past. Take the proper steps, achieve your goals and continue on the journey towards a happier and healthier you!
